Yuengling is America’s Oldest Brewery. In 1829, David G. Yuengling, immigrant from Wurrttemberg, Germany, established the Eagle Brewery on Centre Street in Pottsville, PA. In 1973, David’s son Frederick joins the business and the name is changed to D.G. Yuengling and Son. During prohibition, the brewery switched to near beer brands to survive. In 1933, the brewery celebrates the end of prohibition with “Winner Beer” and ships a truckload to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It grew and passed from generation to generation. In 1996, demand for the brew actually exceeded the brewery’s capacity, so they made the decision to withdraw from markets outside the immediate area. In 2014, Yuengling Brewery is still going strong!
The Lager is on the sweeter side and flavorful. I’d call it a smooth taste, not too strong. In fact, The Biker Chef and I really like it. When we were in Pittsburgh, PA this past winter we bought a couple cases to bring home, since we can’t buy it here in Minnesota. In Pennsylvania, you don’t buy beer in a liquor store, that’s where you buy liquor and wine. You buy your beer at a beer warehouse, what looks like a big garage. You pull up, a guy comes out of the office, helps you load your beer, takes your money, and off you go. Just like that!
Famous beer quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin, Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. There is no evidence that Franklin actually said this. Many people would like to believe it, especially the quote, and of course, it’s on many-a tee shirt in various breweries. Franklin actually said something more to the effect that God sends the rain which helps the plants grow the grapes for our wine and the hops for the beer, and the food that nourishes our bodies.
I love Franklin’s quote, but I don’t like the taste of beer. Bummer. I’m always drawn to pubs (the idea of them) in Ireland. I want to go there one day and people tell me the beer is stout. Whatever that means.
Stout beer is very strong. I don’t like it. I like a sweeter, smoother beer like Yuengling. Pubs are social hangouts. You don’t have to love beer to go there!
I discovered that beer last summer, and it instantly became a new favorite. I love beer, which I like to attribute to the fact that I’m half German. Beer is in my blood.
The Biker Chef would say the same thing. This is definitely one of favorites, too. I’m savoring that last of the bottles we brought home.
I have never been a beer drinker but I may try this one when I visit the states.
I used to love beer. Now I seldom touch it. I would take a taste or two here though.
Wait, when did you go to Pennsylvania? Did I know about this? I feel like I’ve been living under a rock. Well, glad to know about it now, and now I’m even more convinced you will love our beer hall here in Fargo! 🙂
We were there at the end of January. The Chef’s daughter had a new baby, and we celebrated Christmas a little late, and enjoyed being with them. I think you did know. Remember the photo of Roxane’s flowers?
