Quote of the Day: Everyone has a talent. What is rare is the courage to follow the talent to the dark place where it leads. – Erica Jong (b. 1942) American Writer
(This is the first page and check from my first ever published article. Fall 2005 in Her Voice.)
I found my voice through Her Voice, a local publication, “by women…for women…about women.”
Meg Douglas is the editor. She is the kind of editor that all you writers dream of having. She’s nurturing, encouraging, honest, and friendly. She was the first person to call me an “author.” I save my published articles in a binder. I also have a copy of the first check I recieved as a real-live published author. It was a moment where I stepped into my true self and answered my calling as a writer. I discovered that I had something to “say” and that people were interested in my words. Thank you, Meg, for publishing my words in your amazing magazine!
Her Voice is out again this week, published just four times a year, and my story is on a mother-son relationship that is building voices in an amazing choir and spreading hope and love throughout the world. Their group is called From Age to Age. Read about their relationship as executive director (the mom) and artist director (the son), their beautiful music, and their mission to improve the world. It was an honor to write their story.
Journaling Prompt: What is your talent, hidden or revealed, and how deep do you dare to go with it? What is holding you back?
Love that quote! This scrapbook page is so inspiring–your check, your article–too fun!
Winged Writer
I love publications like that! It’s just the very meaning of ‘hometown.’ 🙂
Congrats on your article…and check!

Mystery Writing is Murder
I love the way you saved that first check. It’s so symbolic of the validation of what you do … not only writing, but it validates what you write about as well. Being a mother, creating a beautiful home and lives for others.
As soon as we receive “Her Voice” along with the paper, I check to see if there is an story written by my favorite author, Mary Aalgaard!
Great quote. And a big congrats on publication and your first check. So meaningful and touching…that sign of fulfilling ones dream.
Mary, this brought back fond memories of when it all began for you and “Her Voice.” That time, I think anyway, I helped nudge you. We take turns with that, don’t we? I am so glad you followed the calling. It was their lucky day when you made that contact. And the world is so much the better.
Thanks, All. I didn’t know this post would inspire so much love. Goodness. I’m weeping in my coffee this morning. It’s getting salty! Roxane DID indeed nudge (I think good hard kicked) me into writing for the local mag and sharing my stories. You’re my inspiration, Roxane!
And, thank you, All, for your encouraging words. May your weekend of Love be filled with such Joy!
Oh, that is very cool! I have an editor like that. her name is Janet and she is the editor of another small publication called ‘FootPrints Magazine’ she is a blessing too.
I hope writing is my talent. I also home-school my kids. Does that count??
I love that quote. It is one of the best I’ve ever read. I will go check out, Her Voice. Thanks so much Mary. =)
what a lovely tribute to a friend. it’s the little things that get us headed towards our dreams, isn’t it?
What a beautiful quote.
I’m with Robyn. I hope my talent is writing! I do have a talent in singing, but I don’t use it like I should. 🙁
I love Joanne’s comments. She did a much better job of speaking my heart than I could. And I absolutely love the quote! 🙂
I share your joy of getting published and getting that first check. Congrats and wish for more to come your way.
