Quote of the Day: In 1997, the enchanting world of Disney’s The Lion King came alive in a grand spectacle right here at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, marking its world premiere. As the curtains rose, the audience was transported to the majestic Pride Lands, where Simba’s epic journey unfolded before their eyes. With stunning visuals, innovative puppetry and powerful music, the production captivated hearts and minds, setting a new stand for theatrical excellence. from the Welcome letter by Todd Duesing, President and CEO of Hennepin Theatre Trust, on the legacy of The Lion King, its connection to Minneapolis, and the current Broadway touring production, running through April 28, 2024 at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, then moving on to Dayton, OH.

The creators of this brilliant theatrical adaptation of Disney’s beloved movie The Lion King bring all the magic to life through the music, puppetry, staging, singing, acting, and portrayal of these beloved characters. Although The Lion King premiered in Minneapolis 25 years ago, this was my first time seeing it. From the opening number, with Rafiki (Mukelisiwe Goba, who was born in Durban, South Africa) announcing the birth of Simba, the next King, we were enchanted.  Her singing, chanting and call to welcome the prince was stunning. Then, the animals parade in from the wings, the balcony, the aisles, and overhead with birds on long sticks flying over our heads. It gave me goosebumps and tears in my eyes. What a beautiful, majestic welcome to Simba, and the audience members to the show.

Gerald Ramsey is absolutely royal as Mufasa, gorgeous voice, wonderful acting, and sweet connection to the boy who plays Simba. Their scenes and songs together were so endearing. Peter Hargrave plays Scar, who is very put out by being deprived of the throne by young Simba’s birth. Hargrave gives Scar both an edge and a certain charismatic charm, but watch out for his ulterior motive! Nick Lamedica plays a hilarious Zazu. Nick Cordileone is a delightful Timon, and we saw understudy William John Austin as Pumbaa, who was terrific.

The kids who played young Simba and Nala were darling. They interacted with each other so well, had all the dance moves, and looked like they were having the time of their lives up on stage telling this story. Khalifa White is strong as grown up Nala, and everyone went wild for Darian Sanders as grown up Simba. His performance was also very strong, great voice, great moves and portrayal of the main character. The large cast features incredible dancing (choreography by Garth Fagan) stunning costumes and gorgeous vocals.

The Lion King is known for its puppetry, from large animals like an elephant and giraffes to birds. The actors dress like the characters and blend in with the puppetry that they are wearing or holding. They move like the animals and birds. It is fascinating to watch. Mask, Puppet and costume Design by Julie Taymore and Michael Curry. Gorgeous movable and elegantly designed set by Richard Hudson. Lighting design by Donald Holder, and sound design by Steve Canyon Kennedy. Live orchestra conducted by Karl Shymanovitz, which was fabulous. We were quite impressed by the percussionists on either side of the stage and how, with a nod or eye contact, played together, using all the special instruments for the gorgeous music of this production. Music and Lyrics by the inimitable Elton John and Tim Rice, with additional music by Lebo M. Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymore, and Hans Zimmer.

I sat in the audience in awe of this production. I wished that I had brought my kids to see it when they were young. I was filled with all kinds of nostalgia about watching the Disney movies when they were young, singing the songs, and talking about the characters. This is a spectacular show that anyone can enjoy and feel like a kid again. You can see the Broadway tour of The Lion King at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, MN through April 28, 2024.
