Quote of the Day: This is what you shall do by Walt Whitman
“This is what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.”
“This is what you shall do…” by Walt Whitman, from the preface of Leaves of Grass. Public domain. Found on the Writer’s Almanac on July 4, 2011.
Part of my creative spirit searches for themes wherever I go. (Must be the drama girl inside me.) So, the hat you see in this photo and another more “manly” one gave us our theme song. When Dan put his hat on, I said it looked like a small sombrero, which prompted him, or Lisa, to do the “Mexican Hat Dance” tune – dadadadada-da, dadadadadada-da, and our theme song was born. This triggered the funny word for the weekend, “Yar.” Which seemed to be a blend of cowboy and pirate. We were adventurers afterall.
Do you ever find yourself reading a book and the story seems to fit with your own experiences? I’ve been reading the Abercrombie Trail series, by local author Candace Simar. I was channeling my pioneer roots as I read about the settlers trying to make a go of it here in Minnesota in the 1800’s with the harsh conditions, the bad blood and mistrust between the native tribes of the Sioux and Ojibwe, and the isolation that was felt especially strong by the women.
Our little oddity is out of the bag! We’re glad you joined us and you’re welcome to hang your sombrero there any time!
So THAT’S where you were this holiday — hiding out in the tree house. Who knew? 🙂 Seems wonderfully adventurous. I’m glad you had a place to hang your hat! 🙂
What a lovely message today. Awesome photos, too. The treehouse looks like so much fun.

I could handle a treehouse like that! Not too sure about the outhouse though…
I want to go to a treehouse!
What a wonderful retreat, love the photos and the words.
I feel at peace already. Thanks for the pics! As soon as it cools down I’m taking a hike or walking along the beach and checking out the tide pools.
My neighbor’s sister has a treehouse on her property that I would TOTALLY live in. (it’s that nice) It overlooks a lake too. I would love to sneak away there and write. 🙂
That tree house is pretty amazing and so is the view from it. Looks like a perfect retreat.
I used to dream of having a treehouse, even though I was afraid of climbing a tree. There is something magical about making a home in the trees.
that treehouse is awesome. And now i want to go 4-wheeling!
Although I don’t have the beautiful tree house to create in, I am loving sitting on my little front porch with the flowers blooming, birds singing (and yes, mosquito’s biting!) What a wonderful adventure for you and the pics were awesome! Thanks for sharing!
I love the tree house! And I love the outdoors. We have been hindered in our enjoyment of nature this summer by the smoke from southwestern wildfires, but they couldn’t keep us inside. Best sight of the summer: a family of quail crossing the road.
What an enjoyable way to spend the weekend! Tree houses are very intriguing and charming to me…I’ve never been in one before.
The painting above my desk…I don’t know who the artist is, but I love the colors. It brightens up the room.
I bought it a few months ago at an arts and crafts store.
I want to see more photos of the treehouse! How lovely!
Love it!
You always go on the coolest adventures.
and I have such admiration for all those who cleared the paths before us… I can’t even imagine how difficult life was .
