Quote of the Day: A Chorus Line won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize in Drama for its compelling look at the lives and struggles of dancers as they audition for a Broadway show. It also was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won 9.

What a thrill to see A Chorus Line performed live with original choreography at Park Square Theatre this summer. The stunning cast bring this experience to life with so much energy and heart. We were drawn into their stories from the first note. Stephen DiMenna is the director, and Eddie Gutiérrez is Associate Director and Choreographer. Eddie is a representative of the Michael Bennett Estate and a custodian of Bennett’s original direction and choreography for A Chorus Line. Both directors met with a few of us who are Twin Cities Theater Bloggers and shared with us their connection to this show. It depicts the struggles and emotions of the dancers, and also their personal stories. What they experience goes beyond the stage with themes of determination, pursing a dream, and rising above personal difficulties which most audience members can relate to.

Tyler Michaels King plays Zach, the director. He sits at the back of the audience and comes forward to the stage, occasionally, to talk with the dancers individually. It’s very much like a real rehearsal or audition situation. He has to be stern and a little detached, since he has to cut people. They only need eight dancers, and 28 are on the line. But, he also shows connection and his own emotional response to their stories. He also joins the chorus for the closing number “One,” and it was marvelous. The bloggers got a sneak peek at a rehearsal for A Chorus Line, and we saw them practice this iconic number. It was fascinating to watch the choreographer work with the dancers, giving them notes as they rehearsed, tweaking small things. And, when we saw it live, marveled at how smoothly it all came together.

Through the course of this two hour musical, we watch the dancers rehearse the steps. We see their interaction, at times competitive, and at other times supportive and sympathetic. Zach asks them to tell him something real about themselves, not just their names and where they came from, but something deeper. They hesitate, at first, afraid to show that vulnerability, but as each person speaks, they hear that they are not alone in their personal struggles, and they open up more and more. Everyone captures those emotions so well.

A twelve piece live orchestra under the direction of Wesley Frye is on stage, but behind the curtain. Scenic design is by Benjamin Olsen, which is mostly a bare stage with a solid white line down front, and mirrors on the back wall made of special material that only reflects the performers when they’re close to it. Costumes by Mathew LeFebvre are much like the costumes worn by the original cast. They kept the look and feel of this show in the 1970’s. Sound design by Sean Healy. Lighting by Karin Olson.
