Quote of the Day: The time to sing is when your emotional level is too high to just speak anymore, and the time to dance is when your emotions are just too strong to only sing about how you feel. Bob Fosse, great American choreographer.
Sweet Charity is a musical to watch for it’s fabulous score, dynamic dancing, and gorgeous vocals. It’s pure entertainment. Fun, jazzy music by Cy Coleman and Lyrics by Dorothy Fields. I don’t love the book (by Neil Simon). You can tell it’s meant to be tongue-in-cheek humor, but the male-female relationship feels a little dated. But, don’t let that keep you away. Like I said, it’s the music and dancing that draw you in. And, experiencing a full orchestra on stage, led by the inimitable Anita Ruth, is well worth your time and ticket price. I’d go back just to watch a few of those iconic numbers like Rich Man’s Frug and The Rhythm of Life, again. Most of you will recognize Big Spender and If My Friends Could See Me Now, and they are wonderful! Fosse inspired choreography by Abby Magalee is spectacular!

Shinah Hey is absolutely effervescent as Charity. She shines in all aspects of musical theater, gorgeous vocals, dazzling moves and dance steps, and all the heart that her lovelorn character possesses. The entire ensemble is precision perfect and jazzy. Her two besties from the dance hall, Helene and Nickie, played by Hope Nordquist and Jaclyn McDonald, are delightful. They get fun lines and moves, as well. We loved Brendan Nelson Finn as the awkward Oscar, singing sweetly to Charity as they share their insecurities. Adan Varela charms, as well.
The stage is set with the orchestra up center. The action is usually out front, with minimal set pieces moved on and off. In a few scenes the actors move through the orchestra or sing from a raised platform. Props designer and scenic concept by Katie Phillips. The music and story have a late 1960’s vibe. The costumes have accent pieces to reflect the times, but the performers are mostly in black, while Charity stands out in a vibrant red. Costume coordinator is Britt Hilton. Lighting designer is Shannon Elliott, and sound design by Collin Sherraden. Isabella Dawis is the Music Director, and Anita Ruth is the conductor. The fabulous Laura Leffler is the director of this dynamic show.
You can see Sweet Charity at Artistry in Bloomington through February 16, 2025. It’s a great show to see with your sweetheart, a friend, or by yourself. No matter what, you’ll be entertained!

Considering his age when he died, I’m sure the source material was written many years ago, which would date it.
