Quote of the Day: Nothing magnificent ever happened from staying in your comfort zone. Quote my sister Joy shared with me, from a friend of hers when she talked about an opportunity for a new adventure. We can all be like Bilbo Baggins sometimes and not want to leave our little Hobbit holes where we have all our books and meals, our routine, and knowing what to expect each day. But, there is something “Tookish” in us, too. That part that is curious, that really does want to try something new, and have an adventure.

I teach Youth Theater Workshops in the Brainerd lakes area. We’re coming to the end of a session, and the students have been great. They’re writing a play together, stretching their creative muscles, and learning how to work with each other. It’s a blast. I throw in a few improv games, and they usually jump in with enthusiasm.

It’s one thing to facilitate a group of middle school students practicing their theater skills, it’s quite another to put myself in the position of student and join a group of adults in an improv group. We’ve been meeting every other week, or so, this year. My heart rate goes up. Sometimes, I hold back. Other times, I jump in and say, “Hey, you can’t learn anything by standing on the sidelines.” It’s been a great way to push myself out of my comfort zone. I look forward to it, now, and don’t want to miss a session. Soon, we’ll do this in front of an audience. That’s when the heart palpitations will really rise! But, I’ll do it, and trust my acting partners, and let the adventure take me away.
Go. Create. Inspire!
Journaling Prompt: What have you done lately that pushed you out of your comfort zone? Ever tried improv?
I’ll be offering Summer Youth Theater Workshops in June.
That’s great you’re part of a group as well!
Thanks, Alex. It’s fun. Scary, but fun!
