Quote of the Day: Of all my inventions, I liked the phonograph best. – Thomas Edison
For my Favorite Friday Photos, I’ll show you the treasure I brought home from my parents’ house. This belonged to my mom’s parents.
My kids and my piano students look at this odd piece of furniture, slide open the top, peer in, and say, “What is this thing?”
I hear they’re all the rage, now, with young people who want vintage stereos.
I show them the large black disc and explain, “This is a record.” I show them how to put it on the player. I taught them that in the olden days, we sometimes had to put a penny on the arm so it wouldn’t skip so much. I needed a quarter for this one, must be inflation.
I thought it was a nice addition to my music room, and now, I can play my old vinyl records, like Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, and Pat Benatar.
Go. Create. Inspire!
Journaling Prompt: Do you have some vintage pieces in your home? What music did you like in your younger years?
My parents still have one of those!
I have one of these. And it works really good. And I have all the albums that go with it. Who says record players can’t last forever. 🙂
Thanks Mary
Good to see the old stereo
we had one too but not as decorative as yours.
That’s a beauty……….I still have a turntable to play
some of the old records and Wadeen has lots of Vinyl records
that she just can’t part with.
They really do sound better with scratches on them…….like aging vocal cords.
Love it, that’s my kind of vintage. My family had one of those stereos years ago too. Interesting how they made stereos an actual piece of furniture. And I like the same music now that I liked back in the day, pretty much classic rock and roll 🙂
Oh wow, Mary, this reminds me of one we had very, very much like this one. It went in the fire with everyone else, unfortunately. It often ended up collecting various things that got set upon it, but I do remember it being used, either for the radio or record-playing. Wow. What a memory. I look forward to seeing it in person one of these times. Thanks for the reminder!
That’s beautiful and cool.
I collect old radios so I have a stereo in my bedroom which holds a TV. I have a huge floor radio in my kitchen. They both work but I wouldn’t use them. I value my house wiring more than using them. 🙂
We had a stereo very much like this in our house as a kid. I’d forgotten about putting a penny on the stylus arm. I have a few boxes full of vinyl records, but I’ve since transfered many of them to my Ipod. Great post!
I love this post and picture, Mary. My grandmother had one of these, and played the radio on it–she actually listened to a station that played all Muzak, all the time. I’m not talking the old Big Band standards, which are wonderful. I’m talking violins playing “Moon River” and with overbearing octave doublings.. 😉
But she also played records, especially at Christmas time.
I really appreciate the warm memories this post inspired. Thanks and God bless!
That is a gorgeous piece of furniture. I can see the care and creativity that went into making it.
As for music, in my younger years I mostly listened to Jewel.
I really love antique and vintage things.
