Quote of the Day: I am who I am today because of Her Voice. Not just the magazine, but the daily call and connection to her voice…my wife, Erin. She, and most women for that matter, understand relationships. Hans Anderson, co-author with me on the article in Her Voice, titled “Real Men Read Her Voice”
Hans and I met at the Y during the Group Power weight-lifting fitness class. Whenever the magazine came out, Hans would lean over, talk out of the corner of his mouth and say, “Hey, I read your article in Her Voice.” He confessed that he read the whole thing every time it came out. Then, he started confessing that he likes to write, too. Finally, I asked him if he’d like to write an article with me. He said, “Yes,” and you can read all about it here. Click below the picture of the cover where it says, Open Publication. Click on the words to enlarge them. Our story is on pages 14 & 15. You can find a couple more pictures of me on the table on contents and editorial. Joey, the photographer, had me laughing during the photo shoot. It’s actually pretty funny that I’m even holding an ice fishing pole! This is a great publication with local flair, and also global appeal. I hope you enjoy the articles!
When men first started confessing to me that they read Her Voice, I was surprised. When they complimented my writing, I was flattered. When they asked about my writing, I felt honored and respected. Thanks to all the Real Men who connect with women and aren’t afraid to talk about it.

Journaling Prompt: When have you been surprised by a reaction to your writing, art, or accomplishments?
What a fun article, Mary 🙂
I like the whole idea of bringing the male voice to the publication, giving an interesting twist, and perspective, to the piece. It looks like another writer (Hans) has joined the writing club!
Congrats! That was a really good conversation/article. I like how Hans said that what you think adds “man points” may actually subtract and vice versa. Her Voice looks like an interesting magazine.
The last time I was surprised by a reaction was back in college when I first started writing short stories. I try to remember the positive reaction I received when I feel doubtful of my ability to write a good story.
Mary, excellent! This is so great — it resonates so well with what I’ve been reading about Edith Stein, or St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. She understood the “complementarity” of women and men. We each have our strengths, but one of ours, as women, is our ability to traverse the hardness of the world and get to the heart of the matter. It’s our gift to the world, and when men see this and can appreciate it, then they can be real men, and bring their own unique gifts to the table. Hans is a better man because he loves and appreciates his wife, and all women. Nice job! I’m so envious our “Area Woman” doesn’t offer their mag online like this!
I just read your article today! Love it, and even more, love the photos of you and your huge smile! Your coat is way cute in the photo too!!! 🙂
I enjoyed the article. It’s a great magazine too.
That’s wonderful! I love it when people I wouldn’t expect to read my words compliment me. It makes me feel as though I’ve reached out of my norm to touch someone I would never have aimed for.
Mark of good writing 😀 I’m off to read the article now!
Great article. Hans sounds like such a doll.
How cool is that? I love how he has that ice drill and the magazine…such a dichotomy in that picture…but, why wouldn’t men want to know more about women? I bet it makes him a better hubby to whoever!
Really enjoyed the conversation/article, Mary. It all flows, one sentence to the other with such ease. It’s special that Hans not only reached out but joined in the fun (like Tess commented, love the pic with the drill and the mag; think there’s a follow-up story here with more opposites). Hans is obviously a person who values relationships and is willing to learn about how others think and feel in order to nurture his relationships. That’s soooo cool!
But I’ve got to say that your warm personality doesn’t intimidate and opens the door for others to ask without fear or shame. You’re the angel here, Mary, the bridge that allows others to enter new worlds. Great job!
Great article and great pic – your smile always lights up a photo 🙂
